This is the fundamental theory of quantum mechanics.

The word quantum loosely means a “packet” or discrete amount of energy. Matter or energy can only interact in integer number these packets. This means that an atom can only interact with another atom in these packets. Such as values of 1,2,3,4…. packets. It cannot be 1 1/2, 2 1/2….. packets.

Imagine a magnet pulling on an iron nail. What you observe is the smooth attraction as the nail is pulled towards the magnet. Quantum theory says that this attraction or force does not pull on the nail smoothly or continuously but in broken up force so the nail actually moves toward the magnet in little jumps. These jumps are equal to the energy of the packets. These packets are so small we cannot see them.
